Objective To summarize the visual outcome of patients with severe ocular trauma treated with vitreous surgery. Methods Clinical data of 188(191 eyes) with severe ocular trauma treated with vitreous surgery in a period from November 1996 to April 1998 were analysed retrospectively. Results The study included penetrating injury in 56 eyes, foreign bodies in the posterior segment in 70 eyes, blunt injury in 41 eyes , and globe rupture in 24 eyes. Main complications included endophthalmitis in 35 eyes, choroidal bleeding in 20 eyes, retinal detachment in 60 eyes, and vitreous hemorrhage in 97 eyes. Post-opera-tively, out of 188 eyes, except for 3 of patients too young to examine, visual acuity improved in 133(70.7%), including 85(45.2%) with visal acuity 0.02-1.0, 46(24.5%) remained unchanged; and 9(4.8%) had worse vision. Among 34 with no-light-perception, 12 had light-perception or over. Conclusion A majority of severe trauma eyes can be salvaged with considerable visual recovery after adequate and timely vitreous surgery. (Chin J Ocul Fundus Dis,1999,15:4-6)
Objective To expolre the factors which affect the size of diabetic, macular fobeal avascss scular zone(FAZ). Methods Making ten years of duration of diabetes a limit,79 nonproliferative and early proliferative diabetic patients were divided into 2 groups.Diabetic retinopathy severity level was diveided into 4 stages, and the macular edema was subdivided into focal、diffuse and cystoid according to fluorescein leakage of foveomacular region. All patients were measured FAZ with Heidelberg scanning laser fluoresceion angiography system and then compaired the size of FAZ of patients with different duration of diabetes、diabetic retinopathy severity level and macular edema status. The results were performed analysis of variance and t test. ResultsThe study shown the size of FAZ was not directly related to the duration of diabetes(t=1.3854,Pgt;0.1);There were significant differences about the size of FAZ of patients with different diabetic retinopathy severity level(F=7.6251,P<0.01)and macular edema status(F=5.4369,P<0.01). Conclusion The size of FAZ was significantly increased in diabetic patients. It was enlarged with the development of diabetic retinopathy severity level, but it was not related to duration of diabetes. Objective To evaluate the inhibited effects of small interfering RNA targeting Rac1 (Rac1-siRNA) on rat retinal neovascularization in retinae. Methods Retinal vein occlusion was induced by retinal photodynamic medthod in 25 Sprague-Dawley rats. Rac1-siRNA vector DNA was injected into the vitrous of one eye of those rats (gene intervention group), and empty vector DNA was injected into the fellow eye (blank control group). Rac1-siRNA vector was injected in other 25 SD rats without retinal vein occlusion (blank intervention group). Two weeks after injection, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran was perfused into the hearts of all the rats, and the retinal wholemount was made to observe the neovascularization. The numbers of endothelial cells which break through the internal limiting membrane were counted after hematoxylin-eosin staining. Results A massive of neovascularization and FITC leakage were found in blank control group. Small part of neovascularization and a little FITC leakage were observed in the gene intervention group. Retinal vessels were normal in blank intervention group. Compared with blank contrast group and blank intervention group, the difference of the mean numbers of endothelial cells which broke through the internal limiting membrane in the gene intervention group was significant(t=? P=0.000??lt;0.05). Conclusion Rac1-siRNA can inhibit retinal neovascularization induced by retinal vein occlusion in rats.
Objective To compare the effects of olfactory ensheathing cell (OEC)-containing and pre-degenerated peripheral nerve (PN) transplantation on the axonal regeneration of axotomized retinal ganglion cells (RGC) in adult rats. Methods Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups with 6 rats in each group. A segment of the normal (group A) or 10mu;l-OEC-injected (group B) autogenetic sciatic nerve was sutured onto the ocular stump of the left transected optic nerve (ON). In another 2 groups, the removed sciatic nerve was cultured (group C) or co-cultured with OEC (group D) in vitro for 5 days before transplantation. All animals were executed 4 weeks after transplantation, and the number of Fluoro-goldlabeled RGC in each group was counted. Results The averages of regenerating RGC in group B (1481plusmn;268), C (1235plusmn;266) and D (1464plusmn;285) were significantly higher than that in group A (799plusmn;109; P=0.0002, 0.0010 and 0.0003, respectively). No significant difference was found among group B, C and D (P=0.3644, 0.9167 and 0.4344). Conclusion OEC can promote the axonal regeneration of axotomized RGC in fresh PN graft, which doesnprime;t differ much from the effect of the pre-degenerated PN graft. No additive effect of OEC and the pre-degenerated PN graft can be detected. (Chin J Ocul Fundus Dis, 2007, 23: 130-132)
Objective To investigate the early influences of laser photocoagulation on macular retinal thickness in diabetic retinopathy(DR). Methods Optic coherence tomography examination was performed in 30 eyes with DR(phase Ⅲ~Ⅳ) before, and on the 3rd day and the 7th day after photocoagulation respectively. The thickness of neuroretina and pigment epithelium were measured in the areas of fovea macula and 750 μm from fovea macula. Results Three days after photocoagulation, significant thickening of neuroretina was observed in the fovea macula, which is positively related with age, fasting blood sugar and duration of DR. There was no significant changes in the thickness of pigment epithelium in macula and in the thickness of neuroretina 750 μm from fovea macula. Conclusion Significant thickening of neuroretina in fovea macula in DR early after photocoagulation reveals progressed macular edema induced by photocoagulation which is positively related with age, fasting blood sugar and duration of DR. Purpose To investigate the development of embryonic stem cells (ESC)in the subretinal space. Methods ESC were cultivated in suspension for 4 days till they developed into cell aggregates,i.e.embryonic body(EB).ESC as well as EB combined with or without RA were respectively transplanted into vitreous cavity and subretina1 space in SD rats, and the subretinal transplanted eyes, transient ischemia-reperfusion injuries were made by ligating the ophthalmic artery for 40 seconds before the transplantation .The experimental eyes were enucleated for histological and immunohistochemical assays after 14~28 d. Results The EB was found to develope into photoreceptors induced by RA in the subretinal space under an ischemia-reperfusion condition, and EB transplantation without RA induction induced multiple differentiations in the subretinal space. The single injection of RA without EB induced hyperplasia of the neural retinal cells.ESC transplanted into vitreous cavity rapidly proliferated and developed into atypical hyperplastic mass. Conclusion EB derived from ESC can differentiate into photoreceptors induced by RA in the host subretinal space under an ischemia-reperfusion condition. (Chin J Ocul Fundus Dis,2000,16:213-284)
