  • OPERATIONAL TREATMENT FOR CUTANEOUS SQUAMOUS CANCER OF HEAD AND FACE

Objective To discuss the operative method and experience, through analyzing the medium-term and long-term effect of combined therapy for cutaneous squamous cancer of head and face. Methods From January 1998to December 2002, 37 patients with head or neck cutaneous squamous cancer received combined therapy of operation and radiation. The determination of resect area was based on the stage of the tumor, and according to the resect area and the freedom of peripheral tissue, 3 different operation procedures were adopted respectively. The follow-up was ended in June 2004. Results The follow-up was 5 to 69 months. The median follow-up interval was 38 months. Four patients (10.8%) relapsed during the follow-up, and 2 of them (5.4%) relapsed within 3 years after operation. two patients (5.4%) died from the primary affection, 4 patients (10.8%) died from other causes. According to Kaplan-Meier Method, the 3-year survival rate was 97.14% and the standard error was 0.0358, and 5-year survival rate was 92.28% and the standard error was 0.1047. Conclusion The recurrence rate of cutaneous squamous cancer of head and face witha better prognosis is lower than the ones from other origins. And the survival rate may be improved from proper operative method.

  • Effects of PTD versus TD Regimens for Multiple Myeloma: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of PTD regimen (pamidronate disodium + thalidomide + dexamethasone) and TD regimen (thalidomide + dexamethasone) in the treatment of multiple myeloma. Methods The patients meeting the inclusion criteria were randomly treated with PTD and TD regimens from January 2004 to December 2008. The effectiveness and safety of the two groups were observed after 8 weeks and the statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 13.0 software. Results A total of 25 patients were included, of which 13 were treated with PTD regimen and the other 12 were treated with TD regimen. The results showed overall response rates were 84.6% and 83.3% in the PTD and TD groups, respectively, with no significant difference (Pgt;0.05). The complete response rate (5/13 vs. 1/12) and early response rate (within 2 weeks, 4/13 vs. 1/12) for bone pain in the PTD group were better than those of TD group (Plt;0.05). Conclusion Compared with TD regimen, PTD regimen has more dramatic and faster effects on bone pain relief for multiple myeloma, but for overall response rate, further larger sample size randomized controlled trials are needed.

  • Assessment of Combined Management for Lower Limb Chronic Venous Insufficiency According to CEAP Classification

Objective To assess the combined management of lower limb chronic venous diseases according to the CEAP classification. Methods One hundred and twenty patients were classified according to the CEAP classification. Based on clinical presentation and image study, all patients were treated with combined management plan including oppression, medication and surgery. Results All 120 patients (135 limbs) were followed up in clinic, the local recurrence rate was 18.52%(25/135). Conclusion CEAP classification expounds the developing process of lower limb chronic venous diseases. With CEAP, we can avoid the blind spot in the treatment and expand the extent of combined therapy. Accordingly, CEAP classification is useful in the treatment and diagnosis of chronic venous diseases.
