  • Research progress of epithelial membrane protein 2 in tumor invasion and metastasis

Epithelial membrane protein (EMP) 2 is one of the seven proteins in the EMP gene family and is a tissue-specific transmembrane protein. Recent studies have shown that it exhibits different expression patterns in different tumor tissues and exhibits differentiated manifestations in the invasion and metastasis of different tumors, such as promoting or inhibiting them. Based on these characteristics, progress has been made in the field of anti EMP2 therapy, such as the development of monoclonal antibodies, which may bring new avenues for cancer treatment. Based on this, this article reviews the research progress of EMP2 in tumor invasion and metastasis, in order to provide ideas for determining new tumor targets.

  • RESECTION OF COLORECTAL CARCINOMA WITH METASTASIS TO THE LIVER IN 32 PATIENTS

We evaluated the surgical results in 32 patients with liver metastasis from colorectal carcinoma. Twenty four patients had 1-3 metastatic hepatic nodules and 20 patients had synchronous hepatic metastasis. Liver resection was carried out simultaneously with radical resection of the primary tumour in 15 patients, 5 patients experienced resection 2 to 4 weeks later. Liver and primary tumour were resected as a whole in 5 patients with infiltrating metastasis from colonic carcinoma.Other operative types included atypical resections, left lateral lobectom and right posterior lobectomy, and right hemihepatactomy, right trilobectomy.Hepatic metastasis were all documented by pathology. The 3year and 5year survival rate were 37.5% and 25.0%, with no operative death. The authors believed that the number of metastasis is the most important factor influencing the surgical result, and liver resection is an effective form of treatment for patients with resectable liver metastasis from colorectal carcinoma, but the type of surgery shall be choosed reasonably.

  • CT Features of Peritoneal Metastasis

【Abstract】Objective To study the CT features of peritoneal Metastasis in postoperative patients of ovarian carcinomas. Methods CT appearance of peritoneal metastasis of ovarian carcinomas proved by surgery and pathology in 33 postoperative patients were reviewed. The CT features of the foci were recorded and analyzed, especially on the location, quantity, density and size. Results In the peritoneal cavity, 186 implant foci and 10 recurrent foci were found. metastasis often occurred in the right upper abdomen, especially the right subphrenic spaces. The most frequent locations were the right suprahepatic and subhepatic spaces, the small bowel mesentery, the gastrocolic ligament and the omentum. The density of the foci was most of solid. The size was ranged from 0.5~13 cm. Conclusion Peritoneal metastasis is the most frequent route of metastases for ovarian carcinomas. It is frequently found in upper abdomen, especially in the subphrenic spaces. Localized ascites in the peritoneal cavity is another important sign suggesting peritoneal implants. CT scan from the diaphragm to the pelvic floor will be helpful to diagnose peritoneal implants in cases of postoperative ovarian carcinomas.

  • Invasion and metastasis of human retinoblastoma

Children with retinoblastoma (RB) typically survive their cancer due to advances in early diagnosis and treatment. Extraocular invasion and metastasis, and secondary malignant tumor carry a very high mortality rate. Prerequisites for metastasis include tumor initiating capacity, altered cellular adhesion and cell motility, resistance to extracellular death signals and disruption of the basement membrane and extracellular matrix. All those changes can be determined by the cell of origin and the genetic instability of the tumor, responding to the multiple layers of pressure such as hypoxia, from the tumor microenvironment or niche. The interaction between tumor cells and the tumor stroma is regulated by several metastasissuppressor proteins and microRNA. This knowledge has important implications for our understanding and the treatment of extraocular spreading of RB.

  • The Applied Significance of Carbon Nanoparticles in Central Compartment Lymph Node Dissection in Treatment of cN0 Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Objective To assess the applied significance of carbon nanoparticles in central compartment lymph node dissection in treatment of cN0 papillary thyroid carcinoma. Methods Sixty-eight patients with cN0 papillary thyroid carcinoma who were treated in Tongji Hospital of Tongji Medical College from May. to Oct. in 2012 were randomly allocated to the control group (n=32) and the carbon nanoparticles trace group (tracer group, n=36), receiving non-carbon nanoparticles trace and carbon nanoparticles trace respectively. All patients were received total resection of thyroid plus the affected side and (or) contralateral side central compartment lymph node dissection. The lymph node-related indexes(including number of dissected lymph node at Ⅵarea and lymph node metastasis rate at Ⅵarea) and operative indexs (including operation time, blood loss, drainage time, complication, and hospital stay) were collected and compared between the 2 groups. Results There were 205 and 324 dissected lymph node at central compartment in control group and tracer group respectively. The results of postoperative pathology showed that the number of lymph node in central compartment of the tracer group was much more than those of control group (8.99±2.24 vs. 6.41±1.56, P<0.001). The metastasis rate of central compartment lymph node were 40.6% (13/32) in control group and 47.2% (17/36) in tracer group, but there was no significant difference between the 2 groups (P=0.762). But in medial area of laryngeal recurrent nerve, the metastasis rate in the tracer group (38.9%, 14/36) was much higher than those of control group (12.5%, 4/32), P=0.029. There were no significant differences in the operation time, blood loss, drainage time, hospital stay, and complication incidence such as bleeding, temporary hypocalcemia, and injury of superior laryngeal nerve between 2 groups (P>0.05). All the patients in 2 groups had followed-up for 6 months without death, recurrence, and metastasis. Conclusions The lymphatic tracer technique of carbon nanoparticles may improve the number of dissected lymph nodes in central region of cN0 papillary thyroid carcinoma, without increasing (or prolonging) operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and postoperative hospital stay, and can accurately represent the metastasis of lymph node, thus to make the staging of the tumor accurately and guide postoperative treatment.
